The Search For: The Perfect Summer Cardigan

I spent a good amount of time late this spring looking for a couple cardigans that were lightweight and would get me through the summer.  With the 100 degree heat, this now seems ridiculous – but with being in and out of the A/C all day, I’ve been quite happy that I put so much effort into my search.

Forever 21 cardiganMy “Perfect Summer Cardigan”:

  • Material couldn’t be merino (wool) or cashmere – that would leave me sweltering in the Texas heat
  • Ideally short-sleeve or had longer sleeves that could be rolled
  • Versatile enough to be paired with jeans or a casual sundress
  • Optionally -longer in length.  I’ve been a sucker for the boyfriend-type cardigans lately.

JCrew has several cardigans, but only a few that are cotton or linen/silk blends.  The one they call their “summer cardigan” is actually merino, so leave that for those folks that live in cooler climates.

Target and Anthropologie both have a few good options that are cotton.

Forever21 ended up being my savior.  I found they had several that met all of my criteria and in multiple colors to choose from!  Pictured here: this short sleeve brightly-colored one – Perfecto!

Happy hunting and stay cool!

Bienvenidos, Zara!

I have been driving by Zara’s location on the South side of The Domain every week waiting for it to open, and today, there is sign of life! Why am I so excited? Zara is a Spanish chain, with locations in most of the larger cities in the US. Every time I’m in New York or Chicago I try to hit up a store. I would compare them to Banana Republic on price, but with looks ranging from what you might find in H&M, Urban Outfitters, Reiss and Top Shop. They carry both men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Check out the catalog online for some of what’s in stores… and see you there!

To Online Sample Sale or to Not Online Sample Sale?

Several sites have popped up over the last year are very quickly gaining popularity which feature online sample sales.  They are for members only (but all you have to do is sign-up or get a friend to refer you) and offer sales starting at specific times of the day and usually are only open for 24 hours.  I myself am a member of the big three:  Gilt Groupe, Hautelook, and Rue La La.  And yes, it does require a quick draw of the mouse (and likely a desk job to be around when the sales open) to snatch up what you want before it’s gone.  Each one has its own flavor – my personal favorite being the chic New York City style of  Gilt Groupe.  All of them have similar return policies – store credit only – which has actually discouraged me from larger ticket items.  What’s your experience?  I want to hear it.  Me? I’m more of a browser in this situation and will likely use my credit on a white t from a brand I know and love.

Pretty Skivvies

It’s starting to heat up in Austin! Before long you’ll be wearing that cute sundress  you bought on sale at the end of last season.  You know that before you can awake it from it’s long winter nap, you’re in need of the appropriate undergarments.  Perfect timing: Underwear on 12th an Lamar is having a 50% off sale on some of their merchandise through the end of April.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips

We all know flora colors and patterns spring into fashion every year.  This year, tulip-inspired shapes are showing up all over the place in forms of skirts, dresses and even tops.

Tulip skirts: I’m seeing them mostly in solids cause the pleating detail doesn’t need to be overwhelmed by a pattern.  Stella McCartney’s in a grey silk or a less pricy one from Banana Republic.  I also like this one from TopShop with buttons on the back and this one with more draping. Bluefly also has a few including this basic black one from Alvin Valley

Tulip dresses: TopShop scores again with this dress in pastel pink.  Try a slight twist on a basic black dress from Ann Taylor or a long halter from Marc Jacobs. I also like this cute juniors dress from Nordstroms.

Tulip blouses and Ts: Tulip shapes show up in sleeves from Urban Outfitters and Banana Republic.

These tulip patterns also caught my eye: I love this lovely abstract tulip patterned blouse or a more literal one from Marc Jacobs.

Why didn’t I know this sooner – TopShop has an online store!

I was so jealous of all my New York City-dwelling friends when I heard of TopShop opening there.  LIttle did I know, I don’t have to make the trip up just to visit one of my favorite overseas lower cost retailers.  The TopShop website has a wonderful selection of items.  I might just have to snatch up a few things for myself like this graphic print skirt, this cute tassle clutch, and these black flats with woven detail.  Which, just add a white t-shirt and some gold jewelry, and I’ll be ready for weekend brunch with the girls!  Items are shipped from the UK, which means the only drawback will be the longer wait for my order make it to my doorstep.

Payless – Should I give it another try?

Recessionary times sometimes call for recessionary measures.  With so many designers doing lines for Target, I started looking around to see what other retailers have gotten on the bandwagon of offering designer names at discount prices.  Payless was one that I found that had several designers in their portfolio.  Alice + Olivia and Lela Rose are just a few.  What I’m really looking forward to is the Fall 09 line from Christian Siriano, of Project Runway fame.  Here’s a sneak peak at the line, which isn’t for the faint of heart, or those with chronic back pain.

Sign of the times: net-a-porter launches outlet!

Net-a-porter is my eye candy.  They have a weekly online publication with the latest from the runway and trends of the season.  Their price points are high, so it’s music to my ears to hear they are launching an outlet site: The Outnet.  As of now, they just have a signup to be notified when the site launches at  My hopes are high!
